A2Elementary

Prepositions: place, time, and verb + à, de or infinitive

à, en, chez, dans, depuis, pendant... and the verbs followed by à, de or the bare infinitive: commencer à, essayer de, vouloir partir.

The words that connect everything

Prepositions are the small words that create relationships: between a noun and a place, between a verb and its complement, between a moment and what happens in it. They are among the most frequent words in French, and also among the trickiest, because they often do not translate directly from English.

This lesson brings together the prepositions you need at A2 level, organized by function: location, movement, transport, time, and the essential verb + preposition combinations that appear in every conversation.

1.  Prepositions of place

These prepositions describe where something or someone is located.

2.  Prepositions of movement and direction

Movement prepositions express going somewhere, coming from somewhere, or passing through.

PrepositionMeaningExample
àto (city, place)Je vais à Lyon, à la bibliothèque.
ento (feminine country)Nous allons en Italie.
au / auxto (masculine/plural country)Il part au Canada, aux Pays-Bas.

verstowards, in the direction ofIl marche vers la gare.
jusqu'àas far as, up to (place or time)Le bus va jusqu'à l'aéroport.
parthrough, viaNous passons par Lyon pour aller à Marseille.

💡 à vs dans for location:

à: at or in a named place (city, specific location): Je suis à la gare.

dans: inside a physical space (enclosed container): Je suis dans la gare. (I am inside the station building.)

Both are often correct, but dans emphasizes the interior more strongly.

3.  Chez : a preposition with no English equivalent

chez means "at the home/workplace of". It always refers to a person (or a type of person), never directly to a building. This makes it one of the most distinctively French prepositions.

FrenchEnglish
Je vais chez Marie.I'm going to Marie's (house/flat).
Il est chez le médecin. He's at the doctor's.
Elle travaille chez Renault. She works at Renault.
Je rentre chez moi.I'm going home. (to my own place)
Tu viens chez nous ce soir ?Are you coming to our place tonight?

4.  Transport : en vs à

French uses two different prepositions for means of transport. The distinction follows a clear logic.

en + enclosed transport (you sit inside a vehicle)

à + open/self-powered transport (you ride on or use your own body)

en (enclosed)à (open / self-powered)
en voiture (by car)à vélo (by bike)
en train (by train)à pied (on foot)
en avion (by plane)à moto (by motorbike)
en bus / en car (by bus / coach)à cheval (on horseback)
en métro (by metro)à trottinette (by scooter)
en taxi (by taxi)
en bateau (by boat)

Je vais au travail en métro. (I go to work by metro.)

Elle préfère venir à vélo. (She prefers to come by bike.)

Ils sont partis en voiture. (They left by car.)

Il fait le trajet à pied. (He does the journey on foot.)

5.  Prepositions of time

Several prepositions locate an action or event in time. Some of these were covered in detail in the lesson on time expressions; here is the full A2 overview.
