no prepositionapprendre quelque chose

àapprendre à quelqu'un à + infinitif

Meaning : to teach someone a skill

Why

Before an infinitive, apprendre à is compulsory. Before a noun, the object is direct: you apprend le chinois, never « au chinois ». When you teach, the person is introduced by à, and the infinitive keeps its à: apprendre à quelqu'un à faire.

The trap for a Chinese speaker

學 is apprendre in both cases, but French separates apprendre le chinois (knowledge) from apprendre à conduire (a skill).
