The constructions

àaider quelqu'un à + infinitif

Meaning : helping with an action

Tu peux m'aider à porter ces cartons ?

Do not writeTu peux m'aider de porter ces cartons ?

no prepositionaider quelqu'un

Meaning : the person is the direct object

Elle aide ses parents tous les week-ends.

Why

The person you help is a DIRECT object: aider quelqu'un, hence je l'aide, never « je lui aide ». The action, though, is introduced by à: aider quelqu'un à faire. It is the mirror image of demander, where the person takes à and the action takes de.

The trap for a Chinese speaker

幫助某人做某事 translates word for word as aider quelqu'un à faire: the à is there, but before the ACTION, never before the person.
