Opinion, statement, certainty

espérer que

Both, depending on meaning

Example

J'espère qu'il viendra. / Je n'espère pas qu'il vienne.

Do not write

J'espère qu'il vienne.

Why

THE most frequent trap for learners. In the affirmative, espérer que takes the INDICATIVE, unlike souhaiter que: « j'espère qu'il viendra », never « j'espère qu'il vienne ». In the negative and the interrogative, the subjunctive becomes possible again. Remember the affirmative form, it is the one you will use.
