appeler

no preposition

The constructions

no prepositionappeler quelqu'un

J'appelle ma mère tous les dimanches.

Do not writeJ'appelle à ma mère tous les dimanches.

Why

Appeler quelqu'un is direct: je l'appelle, never « je lui appelle ». It is the exact opposite of téléphoner à quelqu'un, which means the same thing. The pronominal s'appeler gives your name: je m'appelle Marie.

The trap for a Chinese speaker

打電話給某人 has a 給, and so does téléphoner à. But appeler does not: the 給 disappears. Two verbs, one meaning, only one preposition.
