Why
Rendre visite à is used for a PERSON, and takes à: rendre visite à un ami, lui rendre visite. Visiter, direct, is reserved for places: visiter un musée. « Visiter quelqu'un » is only said of hospital or prison visits.
The trap for a Chinese speaker
拜訪某人 and 參觀某地 use two verbs in Chinese too, but English « visit » merges them. French keeps them apart: rendre visite à une personne, visiter un lieu.
