Why
Participer à takes à, and never dans: participer à une réunion, à un projet, à un jeu. English « participate in » and Chinese 參加 (direct) both push towards a mistake.
The trap for a Chinese speaker
參加會議 is direct. In French, participer À une réunion, assister À une réunion: both verbs take à.
