àpréférer quelque chose à quelque chose

Meaning : the second term of the comparison takes à

Elle préfère le thé au café.

Why

Préférer followed by an infinitive takes nothing, like aimer. When you compare two things, the second is introduced by à: préférer le thé au café, préférer lire plutôt que sortir. English « prefer to » is no help: that « to » is not an à.
