Reported speech in the past

Sequence of tenses in reported speech in the past.

When tenses shift

The previous lesson established that when the reporting verb is present, the reported clause keeps its original tense. When the reporting verb is in a past tense: passé composé, imparfait or plus-que-parfait, the tenses in the reported clause shift systematically. The logic is clear: each tense moves one step further into the past.

All the structural transformations from the previous lesson still apply: si for yes/no questions, ce que / ce qui for "what" questions, no inversion, de + infinitive for commands. The new element is the tense shift, plus the adjustment of time expressions that referred to the original moment of speech.

1.  The tense shift table

Direct speech tenseReported speech (past reporting verb)Logic
présentimparfaitpresent shifts one step back
passé composéplus-que-parfaitpast shifts one step further back
futur simpleconditionnel présentfuture from the past = conditional
futur proche (aller + inf.)imparfait of aller + inf.near future shifts to: allait + inf.
imparfaitimparfait (no change)already a past state (no shift needed)
conditionnel présentconditionnel présent (no change)already conditional (no shift needed)

2.  présent → imparfait

5.  No shift : imparfait and conditionnel stay

Two tenses do not shift when reported in the past, because they are already sufficiently past or conditional.

6.  Time expression shifts

When the reporting verb is past, time expressions that referred to the moment of the original speech must shift to reflect the new temporal distance.

Direct speech (original moment)Reported speech (shifted)
aujourd'hui (today)ce jour-là (that day)
maintenant (now)à ce moment-là (at that moment)
hier (yesterday)la veille (the day before)
avant-hier (the day before yesterday)l'avant-veille (two days before)
demain (tomorrow)le lendemain (the next day)
après-demain (the day after tomorrow)le surlendemain (two days later)
la semaine prochaine (next week)la semaine suivante (the following week)

la semaine dernière (last week)la semaine précédente / d'avant (the week before)
ce soir (tonight)ce soir-là (that evening)

Reported: Il a annoncé que le résultat serait annoncé ce jour-là.

7.  Questions with past reporting verb

The same question transformations apply as in the présent lesson: si, ce que, ce qui, interrogative word + no inversion, but the tenses in the reported clause now shift.

Direct questionReported question (past)
Il a demandé : "Tu viens ?"Il a demandé si tu venais.

8.  A complete transformation

Direct speech:

Marie a dit : "Je suis désolée. J'ai raté mon train et je serai en retard. Je vais essayer d'arriver avant midi. Est-ce que tu peux m'attendre ?"

Reported speech:

Marie a dit qu'elle était désolée. Elle a expliqué qu'elle avait raté son train et qu'elle serait en retard. Elle a dit qu'elle allait essayer d'arriver avant midi. Elle a demandé si je pouvais l'attendre.

Marie said she was sorry. She explained she had missed her train and would be late. She said she was going to try to arrive before noon. She asked if I could wait for her.

Shifts: suis → était (présent → imparfait) / ai raté → avait raté (PC → PQP) / serai → serait (futur → conditionnel) / vais essayer → allait essayer (futur proche → allait + inf.) / peux → pouvais (présent → imparfait)
