Grammar / B1 : Intermediate / The past conditional
The past conditional
Regret, reproach: J'aurais dû, tu aurais pu...
What would have happened
The conditionnel passé expresses what would have happened, what should have happened, or what could have happened: but did not. It is the conditional of hindsight, reproach, and regret. In everyday speech it appears in remarks like tu aurais pu m'appeler (you could have called me) or il aurait dû partir plus tôt (he should have left earlier). Its most systematic use is in the third type of conditional sentence, where both the condition and the consequence are in the past.
1. Formation
The conditionnel passé is a compound tense. It is formed with the conditionnel présent of the auxiliary (avoir or être) followed by the past participle. The choice of auxiliary and agreement rules are identical to those of the passé composé.
conditionnel présent of avoir/être + past participle
With avoir
| Subject | Auxiliary | Example: parler | Example: faire |
|---|---|---|---|
With être (agreement applies)
| Subject | Auxiliary | Example: partir |
|---|---|---|
| je (masc.) | serais | je serais parti |
| je (fem.) | serais | je serais partie |
| tu (masc.) | serais | tu serais parti |
| il / on | serait | il serait parti |
| elle | serait | elle serait partie |
| nous | serions | nous serions parti(e)s |
| vous | seriez | vous seriez parti(e)(s) |
| ils | seraient | ils seraient partis |
| elles | seraient | elles seraient parties |
Pronominal verbs
Je me serais levé(e) plus tôt. (I would have got up earlier.)
Elle se serait souvenue. (She would have remembered.)
Ils se seraient rencontrés autrement. (They would have met differently.)
2. Use 1 : reproach and regret
The most frequent everyday use: expressing that something did not happen but should or could have. In English this is "should have", "could have", "would have". In French, devoir, pouvoir and vouloir in the conditionnel passé cover these three meanings.
| French | English | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Tu aurais pu m'appeler ! | You could have called me! | You didn't call; it would have been possible. |
| Il aurait dû partir plus tôt. | He should have left earlier. | He didn't leave early; it was the right thing to do. |
| J'aurais voulu te voir. | I would have liked to see you. | I didn't see you; I would have preferred to. |
| On aurait dû écouter les conseils. | We should have listened to the advice. | We didn't listen; we regret it. |
| Tu aurais dû me le dire ! | You should have told me! | You didn't tell me; I'm reproaching you. |
| Elle n'aurait pas dû accepter. | She shouldn't have accepted. | She accepted; it was a mistake. |
J'aurais aimé être médecin. (I would have liked to be a doctor: but I'm not, and now it's too late.)
On aurait voulu rester plus longtemps. (We would have liked to stay longer: but we couldn't.)
Tu aurais pu faire un effort ! (You could have made an effort! You didn't.)
3. Use 2 : si + plus-que-parfait (Type 3 conditional)
The third and most complex conditional type: both the condition and the consequence are in the past. The si clause uses the plus-que-parfait; the main clause uses the conditionnel passé. The structure expresses: "if something had been different in the past, something else would have turned out differently."
Si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé
(Hypothetical past: the condition was not met)
| Si clause (plus-que-parfait) | Main clause (conditionnel passé) | English |
|---|---|---|
| If I had had money, I would have travelled. |
| If she had been there, she would have understood. |
| Si tu m'avais appelé, | je serais venu. | If you had called me, I would have come. |
| Si on avait su, | on n'aurait pas accepté. | If we had known, we wouldn't have accepted. |
| If you had worked harder, you would have passed the exam. |
⚠ The si clause is ALWAYS in the plus-que-parfait. Never in the conditionnel passé.
4. The three conditional types : complete picture
| Type 1 : possible | Type 2 : hypothetical | Type 3 : counterfactual past | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si clause | présent | imparfait | plus-que-parfait |
| Main clause | futur simple | conditionnel présent | conditionnel passé |
| Time frame | Present or future | Present or future | Past |
| Example | Si tu travailles, tu réussiras. | Si tu travaillais, tu réussirais. | Si tu avais travaillé, tu aurais réussi. |
Mixed conditionals
In natural French, it is possible to mix the structures when the condition is in the past but the consequence affects the present. This is less common but worth recognising.
(If I had studied law, I would be a lawyer today.) (past condition, present consequence)
(If you hadn't eaten so much last night, your stomach wouldn't hurt now.)
5. Journalistic use : unverified past
As with the conditionnel présent, the conditionnel passé signals that reported information about a past event cannot be confirmed by the speaker.
(According to our information, the minister is alleged to have received illegal funds.)
Il y aurait eu plusieurs victimes. (There are said to have been several victims.)
L'entreprise aurait licencié deux cents personnes. (The company is allegedly said to have laid off two hundred people.)
