Grammar / B1 : Intermediate / Expressing purpose

B1Intermediate

Expressing purpose

The fundamental distinction

Purpose expressions answer the question "what for?" : they explain the intended aim of an action. In French, the choice of structure depends on a single question: do the two clauses share the same subject, or do they have different subjects?

Same subject → infinitive (pour / afin de + infinitif)

Je travaille pour réussir. (I work to succeed: I work, I succeed)

(I work so that you succeed: I work, you succeed)

This rule is identical to the one governing the subjunctive: when the two clauses share a subject, the infinitive is used. When they have different subjects, que + subjunctive is required.

1.  pour + infinitif : the standard

pour followed by an infinitive is by far the most common way to express purpose. It is neutral in register, used equally in spoken and written French. The subject of the infinitive is always the same as the subject of the main clause.

Je travaille pour gagner ma vie. (I work to earn a living.)

Elle étudie pour réussir son examen. (She studies in order to pass her exam.)

(He went to Paris to see his friends.)

Mange pour avoir de l'énergie. (Eat to have energy.)

(He saved up to buy a car.)

2.  afin de + infinitif : the formal alternative

afin de is the formal equivalent of pour with an infinitive. The meaning is identical; the choice is purely one of register. afin de belongs to written French, formal speech, and professional communication. In casual conversation, pour is always preferred.

Before a vowel: afin d'.

(He took his medication so as to recover more quickly.)

(In order to understand better, he re-read the text.)

(She contacted customer service so as to obtain a refund.)

(We organised this meeting with the aim of finding a solution.)

pour: neutral, spoken and written, everyday French

afin de: formal, written, professional and official contexts

In DELF B1 written production, using afin de occasionally signals a higher register.

3.  pour que + subjonctif : different subjects

When the purpose involves a different subject from the main clause ("I do X so that someone else achieves Y"), use pour que followed by the subjunctive. This is the most common purpose connector with different subjects.

Before a vowel: pour qu'.

Je t'explique pour que tu comprennes. (I'm explaining so that you understand.)

(He speaks slowly so that everyone can follow.)

(She lent him her book so that he could read it.)

(She's saving so that her children can go to university.)

4.  afin que + subjonctif : formal alternative

afin que is the formal equivalent of pour que with the subjunctive. Meaning and grammar are identical; afin que belongs to formal written French.

Before a vowel: afin qu'.

(He repeated the explanation so that everyone understood.)

(We sent a summary so that they could prepare.)

(The director called a meeting so that the teams would be informed.)

Expressing what one does in order not to happen requires specific structures.

(I'm speaking softly so as not to wake the children.)

(He left early so as not to be late.)

(She saved so as not to have debts.)

(I explain to him so that he doesn't make mistakes.)

(She closed the window so that the children wouldn't be cold.)

(He tiptoes for fear of making noise.)

Elle n'a rien dit de peur qu'on ne la croie pas. (She said nothing for fear they wouldn't believe her.)

Emphasises a clear, specific objective. Formal register.

(He studied Mandarin with the goal of working in China.)

(He is preparing with a view to taking the DELF B2.)

7.  de façon à, de manière à + infinitif

Both mean "so as to / in such a way as to" and emphasise the method used to achieve the aim. They are followed by an infinitive (same subject) or a subjunctive clause (de façon que / de manière que + subjunctive, different subjects). The level is slightly formal.

(Speak louder so as to be heard.)

(He organised his time so as to finish everything before Friday.)
