Grammar / A2 : Elementary / The conditional for politeness
The conditional for politeness
Je voudrais, pourriez-vous...: making polite requests.
The built-in softening tool
French has a built-in way to soften requests and make them more polite: the conditional mood. Instead of Je veux un café (I want a coffee; direct, can sound abrupt), a French speaker says Je voudrais un café (I would like a coffee; always appropriate). The shift is small in form but significant in social effect.
The conditional of politeness is used constantly in everyday situations: ordering at a restaurant, asking for help, making a professional request, or simply buying something in a shop. At A2 level, you do not need the full conditional conjugation; a small set of key forms covers the vast majority of polite situations you will encounter.
1. How it is formed
The conditional is formed from the same stem as the futur simple (infinitive for most verbs, irregular stems for common verbs) with the endings of the imparfait: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
At A2 level, the focus is on the most useful polite forms rather than a complete conjugation. The table below gives the forms you will actually use.
| Infinitive | Conditional stem | je / j' | tu | vous | il/elle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| vouloir | voudr- | voudrais | voudrais | voudriez | voudrait |
| pouvoir | pourr- | pourrais | pourrais | pourriez | pourrait |
| aimer | aimer- | aimerais | aimerais | aimeriez | aimerait |
| avoir | aur- | aurais | aurais | auriez | aurait |
| être | ser- | serais | serais | seriez | serait |
| devoir | devr- | devrais | devrais | devriez | devrait |
| falloir (impersonal) | faudr- | - | - | - | il faudrait |
| savoir | saur- | saurais | saurais | sauriez | saurait |
2. Direct vs polite : the key contrast
The present tense states a fact or expresses a strong desire. The conditional softens the same content into a request or wish. Both are grammatically correct; the choice reflects social context and register.
| Direct (present tense) | Polite (conditional) | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Je veux un café. (I want a coffee.) | Je voudrais un café. (I would like a coffee.) | Ordering in a café |
| Tu peux m'aider ? (Can you help me?) | Tu pourrais m'aider ? (Could you help me?) | Asking a friend |
| Vous pouvez répéter ? (Can you repeat?) | Vous pourriez répéter ? (Could you repeat?) | Asking a teacher or stranger |
| J'aime voyager. (I like travelling.) | J'aimerais voyager en France. (I would love to travel in France.) | Expressing a wish |
| Il faut partir. (We must leave.) | Il faudrait partir. (We should leave / it would be good to leave.) | Softer suggestion |
3. Essential polite forms
Je voudrais : I would like
The most indispensable polite form. Used for ordering, requesting, and expressing wishes. Replaces je veux in almost all public and professional situations.
Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. (I would like a coffee, please.)
Je voudrais réserver une table pour deux. (I would like to book a table for two.)
Je voudrais parler à votre responsable. (I would like to speak to your manager.)
Je voudrais savoir si vous avez des chambres libres. (I would like to know if you have any rooms available.)
Pourriez-vous / Pourrais-tu : Could you
Used to make requests. Pourriez-vous is formal (strangers, professionals), pourrais-tu is informal (friends, family).
Pourriez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît ? (Could you repeat that, please?)
Pourriez-vous m'indiquer la direction de la gare ? (Could you show me the way to the station?)
Pourrais-tu m'aider avec ça ? (Could you help me with this?)
Pourriez-vous parler plus lentement ? (Could you speak more slowly?)
J'aimerais : I would love to / I would like
Used to express desires, preferences, and wishes. Slightly warmer in tone than je voudrais.
J'aimerais voyager au Japon un jour. (I would love to travel to Japan one day.)
J'aimerais changer de travail. (I would like to change jobs.)
On aimerait avoir plus de temps. (We would like to have more time.)
Il faudrait : It would be necessary / We should
A softer, less direct version of il faut. Used to make suggestions without sounding like an order.
Il faudrait partir maintenant. (We should leave now.)
Il faudrait réserver à l'avance. (You should book in advance.)
Il faudrait appeler avant de passer. (It would be better to call before coming.)
Ce serait : It would be
Used to present an idea or suggestion in a tentative, non-imposing way.
Ce serait bien de se retrouver ce soir. (It would be nice to meet up tonight.)
Ce serait possible d'avoir la note ? (Would it be possible to have the bill?)
Ce serait parfait. (That would be perfect.)
Je devrais : I should
Used for advice to oneself, mild obligation, or things one ought to do.
Je devrais appeler ma mère. (I should call my mother.)
Tu devrais te reposer. (You should rest.)
Vous devriez essayer ce restaurant. (You should try this restaurant.)
4. In context : real situations
At a restaurant

Je voudrais le menu à 18 euros.
Pourriez-vous m'apporter de l'eau, s'il vous plaît ?
Ce serait possible d'avoir l'addition ?
In a shop
