Grammar / A2 : Elementary / Adverbs of manner
Adverbs of manner
Formation with -ment: lentement, rapidement, clairement...
Describing how an action is done
Adverbs of manner answer the question "how?" : they describe the way in which an action is performed. Il parle lentement. (He speaks slowly.) Elle travaille sérieusement. (She works seriously.) Tu conduis prudemment. (You drive carefully.)
Most French adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ment to the feminine form of an adjective. The rule is highly productive: once you can form the feminine of an adjective, you can almost always produce its adverb. Three essential words break the pattern and must be learnt separately: bien (well), mal (badly), and vite (quickly).
1. Formation : feminine form + -ment
The default rule: take the feminine form of the adjective and add -ment.
| Masculine adj. | Feminine adj. | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| lent | lente | lentement | slowly |
| doux | douce | doucement | gently, softly |
| heureux | heureuse | heureusement | fortunately, happily |
| malheureux | malheureuse | malheureusement | unfortunately |
| actif | active | activement | actively |
| attentif | attentive | attentivement | attentively |
| sérieux | sérieuse | sérieusement | seriously |
| naturel | naturelle | naturellement | naturally |
| complet | complète | complètement | completely |
| tranquille | tranquille | tranquillement | calmly, quietly |
| rapide | rapide | rapidement | quickly, rapidly |
2. Adjectives ending in a vowel : masculine form + -ment
When the masculine form of an adjective already ends in a vowel (-i, -é, -u, -ai...), add -ment directly to the masculine, not the feminine.
| Masculine adj. | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| vrai | vraiment | really, truly |
| poli | poliment | politely |
| absolu | absolument | absolutely |
| facile | facilement | easily |
| difficile | difficilement | with difficulty |
| libre | librement | freely |
💡 facilement and difficilement: since facile and difficile end in -e, the masculine and feminine forms are identical; add -ment directly to get the adverb.
3. -ant and -ent endings : special forms
Adjectives ending in -ant or -ent have their own pattern. Both produce adverbs ending in -amment or -emment, and both are pronounced the same way: /amɑ̃/.
-ant → -amment
| Adjective | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| courant | couramment | fluently |
| suffisant | suffisamment | sufficiently, enough |
| brillant | brillamment | brilliantly |
| élégant | élégamment | elegantly |
-ent → -emment
| Adjective | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| récent | récemment | recently |
| évident | évidemment | obviously |
| prudent | prudemment | carefully, prudently |
| fréquent | fréquemment | frequently |
| patient | patiemment | patiently |
| intelligent | intelligemment | intelligently |
💡 Despite the spelling difference (-amment vs -emment), both endings are pronounced identically: /amɑ̃/. couramment and récemment sound exactly the same at the end.
4. Irregular adverbs
These adverbs do not follow the -ment formation rule. They are extremely frequent and must be learnt individually.
| Adverb | Related adjective | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| bien | bon / bonne | well | Elle chante bien. (She sings well.) |
| mal | mauvais / mauvaise | badly, poorly | Il conduit mal. (He drives badly.) |
| vite | - | quickly, fast | Parle moins vite ! (Speak more slowly!) |
| fort | fort / forte | loudly, strongly | Il parle trop fort. (He speaks too loudly.) |
| ensemble | - | together | On travaille ensemble. (We work together.) |
| exprès | - | on purpose | Tu l'as fait exprès ? (Did you do it on purpose?) |
| volontiers | - | gladly, willingly | Je viens volontiers. (I'll gladly come.) |
5. Position
In a simple sentence, adverbs of manner go directly after the conjugated verb.
| Structure | Example |
|---|---|
| subject + verb + adverb | Il parle lentement. (He speaks slowly.) |
| subject + verb + adverb | Elle travaille sérieusement. (She works seriously.) |
| subject + verb + adverb | Tu réponds poliment. (You reply politely.) |
Position in compound tenses
In compound tenses, short and common adverbs (bien, mal, vite, souvent, déjà, encore) generally go between the auxiliary and the past participle. Longer -ment adverbs usually come after the past participle.
| Short adverb : before participle | Longer adverb : after participle |
|---|---|
| J'ai bien dormi. (I slept well.) | Il a répondu poliment. (He replied politely.) |
| Tu as vite compris. (You understood quickly.) | Elle a travaillé sérieusement. (She worked seriously.) |
| Il a mal répondu. (He answered badly.) | Il a conduit prudemment. (He drove carefully.) |
6. Adverb vs adjective : never agree
Adverbs never agree with anything. They modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs and are always invariable. A very common error is using an adjective form (with agreement) where an adverb is needed.
| Wrong | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Elle parle lente. | Elle parle lentement. | lente is an adjective; the adverb lentement is needed here |
| Ils ont travaillé sérieux. | Ils ont travaillé sérieusement. | adverb needed to modify the verb travailler |
| Elle chante belle. | Elle chante bien. | belle is an adjective; bien modifies the verb chanter |
💡 Quick test: does the word describe a noun (person, place, thing)? → adjective, must agree. Does it describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb? → adverb, never agrees.
Elle est lente. (She is slow.): lente describes elle → adjective
Elle parle lentement. (She speaks slowly.) · lentement describes parle → adverb
