Pairs often confused

en revanche or par contre in French?

Both are correct and mean the same thing: only register separates them, and a DELF paper prefers en revanche.

Why

Par contre belongs to everyday language, en revanche to written language. The old criticism of par contre has no grammatical basis left, but an examiner reads register: in writing, en revanche is noticed favourably. In speech both are fine.

en revanche

Les tarifs ont augmenté ; en revanche, le service a été élargi.

Prices have risen; on the other hand, the service has been extended.
