Pairs often confused

cependant or pourtant in French?

Pourtant carries SURPRISE: something else was expected. Cependant restricts without surprise, and is the more written of the two.

Why

"Pourtant" says the reply was expected. "Cependant" sets a limit, with no surprise. In a letter of complaint, pourtant fits; in an essay, cependant usually fits better.

cependant
